Writing 1st quarter: We will cover parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs) and sentence structure (subject-verb-object, subject, predicate, run-ons, and sentence fragments) before going through the writing process with personal narratives. Pronouns will also be explored.
Reading 1st quarter: We look at character traits and how they help drive the conflict, resolution, and how characters respond to challenges in a text. We review story elements (plot, characters, conflict, theme, setting) then jump into plot structure (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution). We will also introduce the idea of symbolism and explore themes or central ideas.
Here is a parent guide provided by Wake County for the first two ELA units.
Please note that it is only a guide and that I adjust instruction based on the needs of the class.
